  7. Current Action • At the time being what is happening is a complete hands on capitalistic approach in University management throughout the whole of United States public education. What does this do? • Complete control over employees by part of state and board of directors. • Cutting down on long term staff and brining in short term employees that are easier to replace given a change of plans? • Focus on an increasing revenue even though costs aren’t decreasing. Why? • This approach has been taken due to a decreasing investment of funds available for public education, forcing universities in a search for the most profitable approach given their designated target market.

Team 6 (Cutting Down) • Focuses on administrative units outside of the faculty and student, with no voice being heard besides their own • In charge of reorganizing the colleges, departments, etc. • Lack scientific methods to develop sustainable university, no integrative conflict resolution • “particularly interested in sharing classes at the graduate level or in highly specialized area where classes are small but needed by students” • Not every department of education is being represented, most Team 6 membership is department heads and administration

  10. Bernie Sander’s recommendation • No tuition costs for students attending public universities and colleges. • More full time faculty • All this in order to: • Provide a worthy education • Increase enrollment

Mary Follet September 3, 1868 – December 18, 1933 • Follet was an organizational theorist who was trying to promote Democratic education (an educational idea in which democracy is both a goal and a method of instruction). • This brings democratic values to education including self-determination within a community of equals. • She wanted schools as the community center of democracy. • Follett wanted to resolve conflicts by integrative unity, rather than by domination or by forcing compromises.

  12. Socio-Economic Approach to Management • Increase human development • Convert hidden costs into performance education with accounting, finance, and economic metrics • Aggressive form of management towards budget • Self financing • Bring back full time employment

  13. International Investment Plan: Expand in an international education by bringing in more students from abroad along with a more faculty. Requiring Students to study abroad to graduate. How does this avoid cutting long-term personal with research background? How does this improve next generation’s education? What does it bring to NMSU and the state?

  14. Skit Presenting group represents Team 6 from NMSU. Team 6 then presents plan on what needs to go away. A group of individuals picked to defend against these plans explaining why.

  15. Public Discussion What do you think should change in NMSU? Are there programs that should be cut down? What should we keep or bring in? Which plan do you prefer?

  16. Questions • Do you think the University still offers the same reward from when you decided to enter college? Why or Why not? • What was your dream university you wanted to attend after high school? Why? And what would you like your school to provide with education, tuition, and the social aspects?
