  5. Tunisia • Protests started with self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi on December 17, 2010 • 28 days later, President Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia.

  6. Use of Social Media in Tunisia • The use of facebook and Twitter made it possible for protesters to communicate. • Government censorship and monitoring of these pages made it difficult due to fear of being arrested.

Khaled Said • Facebook page created by Google marketing executive WaelGhonim. • Ghonim created page after he saw image of a man beaten to death by police for speaking out against corruption. • The Facebook memorial became Egypt's biggest page for the revolution with hundreds of thousands of followers.

  13. Internet Blackout • In an effort to stop the mobilization of protesters, the government blocked Twitter and Facebook on the 25th and 26th of January 2011 • On the 28th all internet traffic both in and out of Egypt was stopped

  14. Blackout solution • As a result of the Internet going dark in Egypt; Google, Twitter and SayNow came together and developed a system in which Egyptians could still post tweets.

  15. Twitter Usage • When the protests started in Egypt some of the most used hash tags were #jan25, #Egypt, #Tahrir, and #Mubarak

Analysis and Conclusion • Social media has played a huge role in societies and cultures around the world. • Social medias role and impact in the U.S. is a lot different then its role in other countries around the world. • Social media has helped bring change to people who have been oppressed by governments for many years. • Social media has made it possible for the world to be connected as one.
