  3. Homefront defined: A condition of how we lived and what we were doing as a nation during the war1941 to 1945

America before WWII: • America coming out of the Depression • Japan completes work on 3 aircraft carriers: “Hosho”, “Kaga”, and “Akagi • Japan attacks China • Hitler invades Poland • America wanted no part of another war • Passed Neutrality Act in 1935 • Germany, Italy, and Japan sign the TripartitePact in Berlin • In 1941 the US Army had 1,400,000 men (Germany had approx. 3 million men in 1941) • Americans generally feel safe between their oceans but felt US involvement in Europe may occur

  5. December 7th, 1941 • Just like 9/11, people still find themselves asking, “where were you when…”

  6. My dad was 13 years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. He is now 82. He still remembers that day. He and his family were in their only car, parked in their driveway after coming home from church, when the program they were listening to was interrupted with the unbelievable news.   9. An apprehensive America looks to its leader and turns to its God. America would unite like never before in history.Life was about to change on the Homefront.

  11. Air Raid Wardens watching factory area for threat of enemy planes Many types of Civilian Defense duties existed

  12. During the war, my grandpa served as an air raid warden in the town of Delano, MN. When the town whistle would blow at night it meant ‘all lights out!’He would put on his air raid warden helmet and take his flash light and go out into the neighborhood. There he would look for any house that still had its lights on, and if he found one, offer a stern warning to the inhabitants.

  15. My mom tells the story of how all of the students in her country school would go outside for recess, and instead of play, they would pick milkweed pods. The pods were used for filling life preservers for the Navy.
