Beginnings • 1045- 256 B.C. • Dynasty began when King Wen’s son King Wu launched an attack upon King Zhou of Shang • 45,000 men crossed the Yellow river and won the Battle of Muye • The time ruled by the Zhou Dynasty was split into Eastern and Western Zhou • Western focused on Chinese traditions • Eastern focused on the accelerating collapse of royal authority and some traditions
Leaders • Nearly 40 rulers ruled the Zhou Dynasty • First leader – King Wu of Zhou • Last leader – King Nan of Zhou • Longest leader – King Mu of Zhou: 54 years • Shortest Leader – King Dao of Zhou King Ai of Zhou and King Si of Zhou ruled for less than one year.
Achievements • Fortified cities with walls • Some reached 30 feet tall and over a mile wide • Philosopher Confucius invented Confucianism during the Zhou Dynasty • Agriculture improved • Fertilization and irrigation became popular • Animal-drawn plows and tools were commonly used • Cast iron tools were made a millennium before they were made in Europe • Invented chopsticks
