  3. First off… • Who thinks that they know what happened between Gabe Watson and his wife when they were on honeymoon? • Who would say the general conception is..he killed his wife when they were scuba diving on their honeymoon.

  5. Knowledge issue • To what extent does language and our interpretation of language trigger our emotions and then override our logical thinking?

  7. Language manipulated and interpreted in many ways. We as knowers are therefore affected by this selection of words • “lantern jawed, strongly built man from Alabama murdered his pretty blonde wife of 11 days.” • “who looks capable of engaging in a fatal “bear hug” to squeeze the life out of Tina.” • Tina was a beautiful young blonde woman with her life in front of her. Cc: is it illogical to blindly follow our emotions and media?

  8. Nickname • The honeymoon killer. •  implications of this nick name.

  9. We get angry.. • How can we not want justice for her and her family? • How can we not hate this man who has clearly been pined as guilty? • How can we question our judicial system? • He has been caught, therefore he must be guilty, why do we need to look more into the situation? • This way of thinking then overrides our logical way of thinking.

  10. Other emotions: • We feel guilt which is derived from the contrast between the accused and the victim.

  11. Media slide: • Reliability of media. • Media business • Sad stories sell. • Media is a process of selection based on what consumers most want to buy. • we as thinkers must have an accused and a victim. Victim nice innocent looking, accused mean.

  12. Universal implications • We as thinkers do tend to let our emotions get in the way, because there is never such a thing as complete black or white. Most people think with emotion, can we ever completely separate the two? • Emotion is an inherent aspect of thinking

  13. History • History is told through language as well, and through selectively chosen words. • Process of selection • Textbooks now: • Publishers Use “Chop-Shops” to Write Books not historians, or those educated within the field normally. • “tales, Fables”

  14. Art • Images also language • some say art most expressive language as it portrays an idea within our minds even before they have been put into words.  the power of words.
