  2. Connections with Sophia • She eats healthy at home therefore, I decided to include vegetables and fruits as our items for sell. • Sophia makes her grocery shopping with her family • Recognition of print on newspaper ads.

  3. Items on play center • Vegetables • Fruits • Newspaper ads • Cash register • Books • Prices with picture and name of the item

  4. Sophia interaction with play center • I only saw my case study child once in this area for the entire time of the play center. I worked on making it more inviting for her with books which she loves. When she was in the play center she wanted to be the cashier. She got on the chair and started managing the register. I took anecdotal notes for this observation since there was a small dialogue with her friends.

  5. Other children’s interaction • Children were having an amazing time at the play center. They were managing the supermarket very well by selling the items, making grocery shopping lists and using the shopping cart to move around the items they were buying. Everyday at least 3 or 4 children interacted with the play center.

  6. Further connections • Children had a fieldtrip to the supermarket after the play center was created. We they were able to compare and contrast what we had in the supermarket center in the classroom and the real supermarket. • Children were having conversations about going to the supermarket with their families. Some of them had seen each other at the supermarket and it was a starting conversation between them.

  7. Changes • Put more items to play at the supermarket such as food on cans, milks and meats. • Incorporate story boxes with the play center

  8. Reflection • I really thought my case study child was going to interact more with the center. I learned that sometimes we make plans for the classroom or a particular child but then it does not work the way you planned it. Other times children who you thought will have the least engagement end up have the greatest engagements. Lastly children are able to make great observations of their environments and at the same time they make connection to their life experiences.
