STELLAR’s approach to Language Learning • More children’s interactions with teacher and peers involving speaking and listening activities to encourage expression of thoughts • Learning to read and write using rich and interesting books, which also form the basis of vocabulary and grammar instruction

  19. Why Books? Books: ☼ open up the world for children ☼ help children think and wonder ☼ increase children’s vocabulary and knowledge about the world around them ☼ provide good examples for reading and writing

  20. STELLAR is about … Development of the four language skills  listening  speaking  reading  writing through interesting and engaging books and activities instead of worksheet drills

  21. STELLAR is about… Development of social skills:  oral interaction among peers in non-threatening situations  working in partnership with other children  turn-taking & respect for others during class discussions

Each STELLAR Unit includes… • Focused Reading using Big Books • Key Teaching Points:  concepts about print (spacing between words, reading from left to right, punctuation)  vocabulary word identification activities (spelling patterns, letter-sound relationships) grammar (present tense, past tense, singular/plural forms)

  23. What is a STELLAR lesson like? 1.Shared Reading Experiences (SBA) Children read Big Book with the teacher and engage in oral discussions with teacher and peers 2. Shared Writing Experiences (MLEA) 3. Language Use Activities in Learning Centres After going through an experience (e.g. sandwich making), the teacher models writing using children’s language. Children engage in writing together and then writing independently The teacher prepares mini lessons based on specific needs of children to prepare them for reading & writing activities; e.g. grammar, vocabulary, word recognition, decoding skills, spelling

  25. Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) Introduced to all primary schools in 2011 30 minutes a week within curriculum time

  28. 3. Keeping a personal journal- “My FTGP Journal” What takes place during FTGP? • Pupils: record FTGP journey & Social & Emotional learning • Parents: pen down your thoughts & feelings into child’s journal • Parents: work with child to complete task when required

  29. Programme for Active Learning (PAL)

  30. What is PAL? • A programme instituted by MOE to extend PE, Art and Music curriculum so as to achieve a holistic education. • Consist of fun and varied activities in Sports and Games, Outdoor Education, Performing Arts and Visual Arts.

  31. Objectives of PAL: • Facilitate all-round development of pupils in the 5 learning domains of moral, cognitive, physical, social and aesthetic • Provide varied avenues for pupils to develop social and emotional competencies

  36. What is Holistic Assessment? • Ongoing gathering of information on the child in both academic and non-academic domains • Information is gathered through different modes such as (bite-sized forms of assessment); • Performance tasks • Observation • Questioning • Feedback

  37. Why Holistic Assessment? • Encourages pupils’ personal reflection • Develops ownership of own learning • Creates awareness of how children learn • Helps parents to support their children in areas of concerns • Informs teachers on their teaching practices and lesson design and delivery

  41. How would we prepare your child for formal assessment? Through a balance between pencil-paper testing and rubrics-based observations via performance tasks

  42. If there is no formal assessment, how will my child be promoted to Primary 2? For holistic development: • No banding • Whole class migration

  44. Read • Provide a variety of reading materials at home • Read to and with your child (or, have your child read to you) • Talk about the books and characters read • Give your child books about their special interests

We must be mindful that… • Children need support and encouragement • Children need our help to set up a routine - Check school handbook for homework and teachers’ communication - Establish regular communication with teachers - Monitor that homework is completed - Check letter file for letters from school - Monitor school work (browse through work when initialing on school work)
