  2. GUIDANCE • Key element in parenting is teaching • Children need guidance (discipline) to grow into responsible, caring adults • Parents can use discipline to guide children • Discipline is teaching • What are some effective discipline strategies???

  3. WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GUIDE • The most effective discipline style is a delicate balance between warmth/acceptance and parental control/strictness. 2. An authoritative parenting style is associated with a variety of positive outcomes for children.

  4. WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GUIDE • Understanding of child development is crucial. 4. Consistency in guidance is important to children.

  5. WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GUIDE • Ineffective discipline choices are associated with a variety of personal and family stressors. • Guidance is part of a relationship in which each person influences and is influenced by the other.

  6. DISCIPLINE • To guide & teach • Same category as loving, respecting, & accepting

  7. DISCIPLINE • Purpose is to raise responsible, confident children who will grow up to be thinking & caring adults • Teaching children appropriate behavior • Not punishment

  8. ABC MODEL A = Antecedent; what came before the behavior; feelings , needs , beliefs drive behavior B = Behavior; what the child does or says C = Consequence; the response to the child’s behavior

  9. HOW CHILDREN LEARN • Modeling • Practicing • Consequences of actions OBSERVATION NOT EVALUATION !

  10. EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINE PRACTICES • Good communication • Set realistic limits • Develop rules • Develop consequences • Offer alternatives • Enforce the rules • Give positive reinforcement 8. Wipe the slate clean

  12. PARENTS TEACHINGCHILDREN LEARNING • Teaching children how to behave properly is an important responsibility of parents & caregivers • Children learn appropriate behaviors when parents set consistent limits that are enforced by firm kindness • LOVE & UNDERSTANDING!
