  1. Fractions and Decimals Prep: There are parts in a whole • Year 1: One-half is one of two equal parts of a whole • Year 2: halves, quarters and eighths of shapes. A fourth (half of a half, quarter) as any one of four equal parts of a whole and an eighth (half of a fourth) as any one of eight equal parts of a whole • Number and Place Value: In order for students to grasp an understanding of these concepts, they would need prior knowledge of dividing by 2, 4 and 8 • Partitioning: Students need to understand the partitioning concept to successfully understand different unit fractions • Year 3: Unit fractions 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5 and their multiples to a complete whole and symbols, diagrams, materials and words in relation to unit fractions to tenths • Number and Place Value: Students will first recall their multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten and related division facts
