  2. Road construction comprises of basic four materials which are placed to form four essential layers to construct a road. These are basic steps which are followed in a road construction process. We will look at these as layers starting from the bottom which would be the first layer and go to the topmost layer which is the layer which we can see as consumers and would be in contact with the vehicle. 1. Subgrade - This is the base material while constructing a road. In simpler words, this is nothing but pure soil which is already existing in nature and would already be there where the road has to be constructed. This is the most essential of all road construction materials because it is a natural organic material, unlike other materials which we use in road construction. However, there are a few requirements of this material about the size of the particle which needs to be followed strictly for a finish which is acceptable and long-lasting. 2. Sub-base course - After the soil layer, usually this layer is needed to level the soil layer which isn’t of the desired quality. This is an optional layer but is preferred www.econstructionmart.com

  3. to make the base perfect for road construction. The materials used in this can be of cement base or unbound granules. This quality of this layer is essential for the long life of the road constructed. 3. Base course - The material used in this layer has to be of top most quality and its construction must be done extremely carefully as it is the closest to the final layer. As the last option, this is also an optional layer, but essential if the last layer is very thick or thin bituminous layer. To correct the flaw, this layer is applied evenly. www.econstructionmart.com

  4. Within this particular segment also there are four different types of base course. a. Granular base course- it is a mixture of soil particles which ranges from coarse to fine in size. b. Macadam base- Successive layers of crushed rock mechanically locked by rolling and bonded by stone screening. c. In- water bound macadam- The crushed stones are laid, shaped and compacted and then finer materials are added and washed into the surface to provide a dense material. d. Treated bases- Composed of mineral aggregate and additive to make them strong or more resistant to moisture. Among the treating agents is bitumen. 4. Surface course- this is again one of the most important layers while the road is constructed. The reason being it will be in the direct contact of the wheel of the vehicle. Underneath this segment, we have two categories as well. www.econstructionmart.com

  5. a. Flexible pavement- Yes, this is what is used in Road constructions in India. Consists of a combination of mineral aggregate with bituminous binder ranging from inexpensive surface treatment ¼ in or less thick to asphaltic concrete. It provides smooth riding and skiing surface, also it is free from cracking or raveling. It also has resistance from the weather(heat or cold) and internal moisture. b. Rigid pavement- the roads made from concrete are called rigid roads. Again underneath this category, we would have four kinds of pavements which have different purposes to fulfill. To list they would be, plain pavements with dowels, pain pavements without dowels, conventionally reinforced pavements and lastly continuously reinforced pavements. This differs only slightly as per your use, you can choose the kind you would want to opt for.’ The road construction process will comprise of a lot more than just the materials. One of the other many important things would be, road construction equipments being used. The materials and the www.econstructionmart.com

  6. equipments together will help you achieve the best quality road which will also be long-lasting and free from any unknown fails. This all would require you to have the best manpower to be able to construct the desired road and use the equipments and the materials efficiently and work effectively in the given time period to complete the task. www.econstructionmart.com
