  1. A MEMBER OF THE RUSSELL GROUP

  2. EDUCATIONAL/CLINICAL SUPERVISIONFOR MEDICAL STUDENTS David Taylor School of Medicine and Tista Chakravarty-Gannon GMC

  3. General Medical Council • Good Medical Practice (2001) • ‘If you are involved in teaching you must develop the skills, attitudes and practices of a competent teacher’ (para.16) • More later......

  4. General Medical Council • Tomorrow’s Doctors (2009) • Medical schools must make sure that everyone involved in educating medical students has the necessary knowledge and skills for their role… The medical school must ensure that appropriate training is provided to these people to carry out their role. (para 148)

  5. The problem • It is crucial that we meet our joint professional responsibilities towards our students. • We have a real issue concerning the impression the students have of (some of) us as teachers. • But of course we are very busy and there are many competing imperatives.

  6. We are not operating in a vacuum

  7. The solution • We need to be sure that all staff involved in teaching medical students have a basic training in education. • Not just those with a primary medical qualification • But at least level 1

  8. The School of Medicine • Will work alongside the Trusts and the Deanery to make sure we don’t duplicate… • Will provide additional training as required to cover PBL, LOCAS and OSCEs • And other issues that are identified as necessary

  9. General Medical Council • Tomorrow’s Doctors (2009) • Doctors with particular responsibilities for teaching students must develop the skills and practices of a competent teacher… (para 149)

  10. So there is a personal responsibility • Some have already taken steps to move beyond level 1, to level 2 and above. • But everyone needs to be familiar • with the bigger national picture.

  11. What’s going on? • Many Royal Colleges have criteria for what constitutes appropriate teaching skills. • There is also a national organisation called the Academy of Medical Educators • who have produced a “Professional Standards” booklet. • www.medicaleducators.org

  12. But the key thing is • If we want good FY1s..... • We need to invest time in the students.
