Medical Equipment Management • Medical equipment is defined as any equipment that is applied to a patient or used to assess a clinical parameter about a patient • Medical Equipment records are located in the main laboratory area of each health • Medical Equipment records are maintained for the life of the instrument

  4. Medical Equipment Management • Dental Equipment records are documented on the JCDH intranet • Records includes all initial equipment records, re-inspection and calibration records, quarterly summaries, summaries of all instrument failures and remedial action

  5. Medical Equipment Management • All Records, including outside contracts such as scale calibration and oxygen cylinders should be maintained in the Medical Equipment records

Medical Equipment ManagementTraining- Competency • Medical Technologist performs training/competency assessment on laboratory equipment usage • Clinical services nurses provide training/competency assessment on medical equipment other than lab equipment • Dental services provides dental equipment training/competency assessment

Medical Equipment Initial Testing • All medical equipment must be inspected prior to use • Electrical Safety Criteria • Ground pin continuity of less than 1.0 ohms • Ground pin continuity (other) as manufacturer’s specification or • Internal isolation transformer and electrically insulated with no ground • Fire Safety • UL approval • No frayed wiring

  8. Medical Equipment Initial • Miscellaneous • Service Manual available • Operator manual available • Instrument passes initial performance test • Instrument undamaged and no parts are missing • Checked for possible physical risks to patient

  16. Medical Waste Policy • “Items contaminated with blood or body fluids derived from blood components (serum /plasma). Also included are secretions from lab specimens to include blood, tissue, semen, vaginal fluid, pleural fluid amniotic fluid and urine.” • Urine is discarded in the sink or toilet • Dispose the urine container in Medical Waste Container Medical Waste only
