  3. What is Career Technical Education (CTE)? The CTE program is a sequenced program of study that: • Integrates academic and career technical education curriculum, including workplace competencies • Engages students in contextual learning so that they are able to complete a career major sequence that prepares them for postsecondary study and employment

  4. The CDE Plan for CTE • Focuses on rigorous and engaging curricula, supportive relationships, and demonstrated outcomes • Reshapes and revitalizes the role of career technical education as the nucleus of school reform, workforce and economic development

  5. CDE Priorities • CTE is woven into the fabric of education, not a separate system of education • Programs are built on a demand-driven system that responds to real workforce needs, and state, regional, and local labor market realities

The Vision of CTE is to… • Engage every student in high-quality, rigorous, and relevant educational pathways and programs, developed in partnership with business and industry • Promote creativity, innovation, leadership, community service, and lifelong learning • Allow students to turn their “passions into paychecks” – their dreams into careers

  7. The Mission of CTE is to… Provide industry-linked programs and services that enable all individuals to reach their career goals in order to achieve economic self-sufficiency, compete in the global marketplace, and contribute to California’s economic prosperity.

CTE System Goals • Prepare all students for success in further education and/or immediate employment • Prepare all students with the skills and knowledge needed to reach career goals and self-sufficiency • Design and base courses on industry-endorsed standards and meet labor demands including new and emerging occupations • Collect, analyze, and use data for program improvement, accountability, and measurement of outcomes

  9. California CTE Model Curriculum Standards • Organized in 15 industry sectors, or groupings, of interrelated occupations and broad industries. Each sector has two or more career pathways. • Serve as the basis for the curriculum frameworks, instructional materials, and statewide assessments in California.

CDE’s Industry Sectors Available subjects, also known as industry sectors, are as follows: • Agriculture and Natural Resources • Arts, Media, and Entertainment • Building Trades and Construction • Education, Child Development, and Family Services • Energy and Utilities • Engineering and Design • Fashion and Interior Design • Finance and Business • Health Science and Medical Technology • Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation • Information Technology • Manufacturing and Product Development • Marketing, Sales, and Service • Public Service • Transportation * The green highlighted sectors are offered in OACE

  18. Example: CNA Program • Assessment: • Course exams • State exam • Outcome: • 90% of students who pass the CNA course also pass the state exam (Baseline: 08-09) • State certification • Proficient and job ready

  19. Example: Administrative Assistant Program • Assessment: • Individual software exams (SkillCheck exams) • Outcome: • 90% of students completed the exams for Admin I and Admin II with a score of 80% or higher (Baseline: 08-09) • Program certificates • Proficient and job ready (after Admin II)
