Progress report: 01/29/2010 AVISO currents and CCMP3 winds

This report examines the formation and seasonal variability of the slope sea gyre, with a focus on factors such as wind, changes in GS-transport, inflow of Labrador Sea water, along-slope sea level changes, and heating/cooling. Complex correlation coefficients between AVISO currents and CCMP3 winds are analyzed to understand the relationship between these variables.

  1. Progress report: 01/29/2010AVISO currents and CCMP3 winds Fanghua Xu See my notes on various pages…

  2. 16-year averaged SSH and geostrophic currents Slope Sea Gyre location

  3. Monthly mean of AVISO SSH and currents

  4. 16-year averaged seasonal SSH and geostrophic currents

  5. Animation of annual mean of SSH and geostrophic currents from AVISO

  6. Summary • The slope sea gyre is stronger in winter and spring, and becomes weaker in summer and fall. • The slope sea gyre has an interannal variability, related to the path of GS.

  7. Question? • What is the reason for the formation of slope sea gyre, and why does the gyre have a seasonal and interannal variability?Possibly due to:1. wind and wind curl?2. changes in GS-transport in CH/SAB/Florida Straits? 3. changes in inflow of Labrador Sea water?4. changes in along-slope sea level from CH to Nova Scotia?5. Heating and cooling?
