Values. Our Moral Compass 2010. What are Values ??. They are linked to our personal philosophy. They are unique to us but may generally be shared by others as well. They are at the very core of our belief systems. Most of us act automatically upon them and give them little thought.

What are Values ?? • They are linked to our personal philosophy. • They are unique to us but may generally be shared by others as well. • They are at the very core of our belief systems. • Most of us act automatically upon them and give them little thought. • All of our values are based on personal experiences.

  3. Why do we have them ? • We use them to guide our decision making. • We fall back on them in times of trouble in order to refocus and heal. • On a social scale we all measure one another's value on the ‘’ values ‘’ we model. • Values drive our behaviours.

  4. They are our basic do’s and don'ts list . In a way they act as a moral traffic light. Never assume that we all share the same sense of morality

  5. How do we use them ? • For most of us our values have come to use by way of trial and error......we test drove them as kids  • In most cases we learn our values from our parents / community / peer group or other social influences. • Sometimes we hold values that we never intend to practice. • These are borrowedvalues......when you say you value something you cant/wont model, family, hard work, fairness / respect.....

  6. Group Work  Having conflicting values can often cause issues in our personal lives. List some conflicting personal values ? In the Human Services field conflicting values are not conducive to ethical behaviour.....Why ? In this field you will be expected to model your values....Why and How ?

  7. Human Services Values • Non Judgmental behaviour toward others. Empathic understanding. • Acceptance , to recognize others as having worth. • To provide support and advocacy for those who require or seek it.

  8. To model moral personal standards. • you are what you do ! • * Confidentiality. • * Self Determination , to allow others to make empowering choices in order to determine their own destiny.

  9. In Closing • If we act upon socially or criminally deviant norms or activities such as .... Theft, threats, racism/homophobia, involvement in drug culture, deviant sexual behaviour .....It is only because we “ value “ them ..... There is some level of pay-off ! • The Human Services field will not tolerate these values ... In time conflicting values will be recognized. • Retool your value set now !!!
