Conservation Innovation Grants • Funded with EQIP funds and must benefit EQIP eligible producers • National and State Components created by legislation • Both utilize a typical federal grant process via grants.gov and allow both online or offline application • National allows applications from a wider range of projects, but even state categories are very inclusive

  6. National CIG • $20 Million available in 2009 • Nationwide competition • Grants process

  7. National CIG Categories • Natural Resource Concerns – up to $5 million • Technology – up to $6 million • Grant Leveraging Category – up to $4 million • Chesapeake Bay Watershed – up to $ 5 million

  8. National CIG • Not a research program • Tool to stimulate the adoption of practices or technologies • Target innovative on-the-ground conservation • Includes pilot and demonstration • 50% overall match • 50% cash and in kind contributions

Conservation Innovation Grants • NM State CIG has an initial allocation of $150,000 • May not seem like much, but last year only one award was made, and funds were re-distributed to general EQIP • Provides federal matching funds up to $75,000 • Requires a 50% match, of which 50% generally can be in cash • This year applications were accepted in two categories: • Natural Resource Concerns category • Technology category • Special consideration were accorded to riparian projects, but all were considered.

  10. Conservation Innovation Grants • Allow indirect costs up to 15% • Do not allow federal employee salaries to be counted toward match, but may participate • May interpret “innovative” as liberally as individual reviewers, but can readily accommodate use of existing technologies to meet under addressed resource concerns within a geographic area. • Deadline for application was May 15, 2009

Energy - CIG • Subset of EQIP • EQIP- Purpose – Promote ag production, forest management, and environmental quality as compatible goal • Objective- Providing flexible assistance to install and maintain conservation practices that sustain food and fiber production while enhancing soil, surface and ground water, and related resources and conserving ENERGY.
