  2. 2011 Super Outbreak • Occurred from April 25thto April 28th 2011 • 358 tornados spread across 21 states, but had the largest impacts in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia • 208 of the tornados occurred on April 27th, the deadliest tornado day in this country’s history since 1925

  3. Fatalities • 346 fatalities as a result of the outbreak • 322 of these deaths were directly caused by the tornados, while the remaining 24 deaths were a result of ensuing flash floods, hail storms and lightening • 239 of the 322 deaths were recorded in Alabama alone

Vilonia TOrnado • First tornado of the outbreak to result in fatalities • Struck Vilonia, Arkansas in Faulkner County around 7:30 PM • Could have had a significantly higher amount of fatalities if not for the tornado warning issued 30 minutes prior • 4 fatalities • Major structural damage to houses and buildings within Vilonia

Aftermath • On April 27th, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley declared a state of emergency as a result of severe thunderstorms and • Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Oklahoma also declared a state of emergency due to their tornados and flash floods. • On April 27th, Barrack Obama issued a federal emergency declaration for the state of Alabama • This sent search and rescue units to the affected regions of the state
