  3. Services provided by IIS • Web service – for web hosting. It’s based on Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). • File transfer – for exchanging files. It’s based on File Transfer Protocol (FTP). • Handling Internet Mail – It’s based on Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). • Hosting newsgroup – it’s based on Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). • Web page automation-using Active Server Pages (ASP). • Support for emerging web technologies – Extensible Markup Language (XML), Wed distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) protocol. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) • It’s a industry-standard file exchange protocol. • It allows different systems to exchange files. • It allows systems to exchange files across the Internet in a quick and efficient manner. • FTP service can be used to transmit files over the Internet. • Many third-party 32-bit FTP clients are available that can run within the MS OS. Module11: Internet Information Services

  6. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) • It allows to format and transfer text message between systems. • Within Windows Server 2003, it’s a part of Active Directory and can be used to link AD sites together through the Internet. • SMTP service can be used for Internet e-mail. Module11: Internet Information Services

  7. Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) • NNTP service allows a web site to host its own newsgroups, which provide for the exchange of threaded messages connected to a single topic. • A newsgroup is a community of people interested in a specific subject, such as sport, habit, and garden. Module11: Internet Information Services

  9. How to access the IIS Manager? • Two snap-ins enable you to access the IIS Manager. • Application Server snap-in • Internet information Services (IIS) Manager Module11: Internet Information Services

  10. Host Multiple Sites • Both WWW and FTP services allow multiple sites to be set up on one IIS server. • Sites are sometime called as virtual server. • 3 identifiers of a web site: • A port number • An IP address • A host header name • Only need one IP to host many sites. Module11: Internet Information Services

  11. Configuring the IIS6 • There are two configuration layers: • Master setting – affect all the Web sites created on the IIS server. All web sites have the same base configuration. Changing the web site folder properties. • Individual web site – setting for each web site that you create. Changing the Web site properties. Module11: Internet Information Services
