  1. The Universe • Matter is the tangible stuff that makes up the universe (periodic table of elements) • Energy is the ability to do work. • Everything in the universe can be categorized as either matter or energy

  2. Density • Density is a fundamental property of matter. • Density is used to compare materials • Density = Mass/ Volume

  3. Mass Mass: the substance or presence of composed matter. Mass is directly related to the atoms in matter. The periodic table of elements is organized by atomic size. Small atoms have little mass, large atoms have greater mass

  4. Volume • Volume is measured in cubic centimeters or millimeters. • Volume is three dimensional space • Volume can be determined by submerging an apple in a container of water. The amount of displaced water is the volume

  5. Convection Convection is the transportation of energy due to its natural density. The mass movement of warm air upward is convection. • Fluid receives heat, becomes less dense and rises. • Energy generated only by the natural differences in density
