  8. The Program You will: • master the practice standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario • successfully write the Registered Practical Nursing Examination to qualify for certification with CNO

Rationale for the PN Pathway Program • GBC, CALC and YALC are working collaboratively and have negotiated some changes based on the changing entry to practice requirements as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.  • The changes are believed to provide students with enhanced preparation for entering into the regulated PN program at GBC and this preparation is believed to be essential to support student’s long term success.

  12. Why? • The Scope of Practice for PN has increased dramatically over the last few years • Student feedback has revealed the need for increased preparation and a decrease in the workload in semester 1. • Students will benefit from new state of the art lab facilities at the new Waterfront campus for Health Sciences at GBC.

  13. How? • By offering some of the core and elective courses in the pathway program students will achieve advance standing in first semester courses which will result in a reduced workload in semesters 1 and 2 at GBC.

  14. Where does this lead? • The pathway program articulates directly into first semester at GBC without students having to compete with the approximately 3000 applicants that apply each semester for the 160 available places at GBC.

  15. Pathway Courses • Anatomy • Biochemistry • Computer Applications* • Lifespan Development* • Nutrition* • Communications* All courses have a 60% pass mark * These courses qualify for advanced standing for semesters 1 and 2

  16. In the pathway semester at CALC, you can earn 6 credits toward your high school diploma! • Upon completion of the pathway semester, you move to George Brown College to complete your studies in the Nursing Faculty

Courses for semester 1 at GBC • Anatomy and Physiology • Clinical Applications • Foundations of Nursing Theory/Profession of Nursing • Math and Pharmacology • College English • Life Span Development • Nutrition (Elective) • Computer Applications ****First semester would be reduce by 3 courses, giving you more time to study and absorb the important nursing information. The other elective will lessen the workload in semester 3!

  18. 1st semester approximately $750 includes $185 payable to school for: Student Activity Fee Computer course Book Deposit ($100 refundable) students pay for one resource text, CPR, First Aid, Police Check, Health Passport, Mask Fit Plus... English Assessment Testing $25 – paid at the time of testing Credit or debit only Those costs do not qualify for OSAP Costs... $$$

  22. If you wish entry into the Pathway to PN program and do not have the prerequisites… Take regular classes at CALC and apply for Pathway to Program for February 2013.

  24. How do I apply?

  25. Bring Documents to Assessment Tests… • One of: • Canadian Birth certificate/Canadian Passport or Canadian Citizenship card • Landed Immigrant Paper or Permanent Resident Card • For Convention Refugees – Valid Study Permit • Transcripts/Educational documents from: • the last Ontario high school you attended • Health card Note: You must show some photo ID

  26. What’s next??

  27. English Assessment The Reading component of the assessment examines a candidate’s comprehension, vocabulary and knowledge of grammar. The assessment is multiple choice. There will be short readings related to medical issues and nursing. The Reading component is worth 40% of the final assessment evaluation. One hour is allowed for the Reading component.

  28. English Assessment (cont.) The Writing component of the assessment examines the candidate’s ability to write a supported opinion essay on a topic related to nursing. Candidates will be expected to produce an organized , thoughtful essay with few mechanical errors. The Writing component of the assessment is worth 40% of the final assessment evaluation. Candidates must earn 65 % to be eligible for the program. One hour is allowed for the Writing component.

  29. English Assessment (cont.) The Listening component of the assessment examines the candidate’s ability comprehend and recall facts derived from a short passage read by an assessor. The Listening component is worth 20% of the final assessment.

  30. Step 1Attend assessment tests on Monday, May 7th or Wednesday, June 6at 8:30 am. Be prepared to stay until 1PM. Do not be late!!! • Pay $25 Non Refundable assessment fee $$$ • Ensure that you have the originals of the following documents: • transcripts or equivalent documentation • citizenship/landed status/convention refugee documents • Proof of address • Complete an application form with a clear telephone #

  31. Step 2 Assessment Tests are weighted as follows: • English - written 40% • English - reading/grammar 40% • English – listening 20%

Step 3 • Successful candidates will be called during the week of June 11th • Selection will be based on your assessment results and transcripts, including completion of required prerequisites • An orientation session will be held at CALC on June 20th • The $185 registration fee is due at this time • A wait list will be maintained in case of openings

  34. Note: If you are selected for the program • you will receive information regarding the cost of and potential locations for taking CPR and First Aid at the Orientation Meeting • we recommend that you DO NOT take your training prior to the Meeting

  35. Step 4 • Confirm your acceptance by attending the orientation session on Wednesday, June 20th. If you do not attend your place may be given to someone on the wait list.

  36. Successful candidates must pay fees by credit or debit cardonly.The first instructional session at the school will be commencing on Aug. 27th, 2012
