  14. The 1st type of Propaganda is… Convincing people to do something because “everybodyis doing it” or because “the majorityof people are doing it” (Peer pressure) Bandwagon Everybody has one! All the cool kids are doing it Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it.

  15. Bandwagon Technique • Everyone is doing it! You should too!!!

  16. The 2nd type of Propaganda is… Card Stacking Making one side or product look better by only mentioning some of the facts Words that leave us with positive feelings are used to describe a product, person, or idea. 18. The 3rd type of Propaganda is… Glittering Generalities Truth Words that sound attractive or catchy, but really don’t mean anything. New and improved Based on the words used to sell, the customer thinks they are getting something better than what it really might be. These are just: logical fallacies Beauty What’s a fallacy you ask? a deceptive, misleading, or false notion or belief

  19. Glittering Generalities Examples “This new recipe is all natural!” “It’s 100% organic!” You’re Thinking… “Wow, if it’s all natural, it must be really good! What you should be thinking… Wait a minute… “My dog’s mess is all natural and I sure don’t want to eat that!”

  20. The 4th type of Propaganda is… Name Calling or stereotyping • A negativeword or feeling is attached to an idea, product, or person. criticizing or ridiculing a person or product

  21. The 5th type of Propaganda is… Plain Folks • Spokesperson is an ordinary citizen, “someone just like you” who can be trusted • Examples: • The neighbor recommends this candidate • Mom loves this product • A famous person endorses an idea, a product, a candidate. • If someone famous uses this product, believes this idea, or supports this candidate, so should we. • Makes the leaders look like Plain folks (mom and pop style). • a convincing method to show they are just common people.

  22. The 6th type of Propaganda is… Testimonial Testimonials are quotations or endorsements which connect a famous or respectable person with a product or item.

  23. Testimonial: Using the words of a famous person to persuade you. My face has never been so clear after using Proactiv; I love it!!! You should buy today… after all, Jessica Simpson did!

  24. The 7th type of Propaganda is… Transfer -Feelings (good or bad) are transferredto something else. Transfer tries to make you view something in the same way as they view something else. In the Kerry vs. Bush campaign, an internet email circulated showing similar physical characteristics between John Kerry and a Frankenstein monster.
