  7. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  8. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  9. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ…” “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. “Christ, who is your life…” • Emphasis on BEING before DOING. • You are saved by grace through faith to do good works (cf., Eph 2:8-10)… not in reverse order!

  10. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  11. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) • “hearts” = affections • “minds” = choices, wills

  12. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) • “hearts” = affections • “minds” = choices, wills • “toset” = to seek after earnestly = to think constantly about

  13. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) • “hearts” = affections • “minds” = choices, wills • “toset” = to seek after earnestly = to think constantly about = to synchronize [to make two things agree]

  14. Colossians 3:5-10 (NIV) 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

  16. Colossians 3:3 “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”

  17. Colossians 3:3 “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” If Christians fall into these sinful practices, they are reverting to a lifestyle which no longer reflects their true identity.

  18. Romans 6:11-14 (NIV) Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

  19. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

  21. Colossians 3:5 “Put to death…” • We are not to simply suppress or control evil desires and actions… we are to wipe them out!

  22. Colossians 3:5 “Put to death…” • We are not to simply suppress or control evil desires and actions… we are to wipe them out! • We are able to do this because, as Christians, we are no longer who we once were (cf. Rom 6:14).

  23. Colossians 3:5 “Put to death…” • We are not to simply suppress or control evil desires and actions… we are to wipe them out! • We are able to do this because, as Christians, we are no longer who we once were (cf. Rom 6:14). • You must kill these evil desires because you can (“Christ in you”- Col 1:27).

  24. Colossians 3:11 (NIV) Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

  25. Colossians 3:11 (NIV) Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. • We can no longer excuse wrong conduct because of our background.

  26. APPLICATION

  27. APPLICATION • Living a life “worthy of the Lord” and “pleasing Him in every way” (Col 1:10) does not come by our self-effort, but through the life and power of Christ as we trust in Him.

  28. APPLICATION • Living a life “worthy of the Lord” and “pleasing Him in every way” (Col 1:10) does not come by our self-effort, but through the life and power of Christ as we trust in Him. • Synchronizing our affections and choices with Christ gives us the ability to “put to death” the evil desires that tempt us.

  29. Failures

  30. Share an experience in which (you felt like) you failed. What did you learn from that experience?

  31. Matthew 16:15-18 (NIV) 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

  32. My Life Lesson #1 Don’t serve with the intention of being a human cork.

  33. Exodus 13:17-18 (NIV) 17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt armed for battle.

  39. My Life Lesson #2 God is always more concerned about who you are becoming, than how fast you get to a particular destination.

  40. Luke 15:28-32 (NIV) 28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ 31 “ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”

  41. My Life Lesson #3 Focus on intimacy, not performance.

  42. My Life Lesson #3 Focus on intimacy, not performance. “We burn out when we stop walking with God and start working with God.” - Pete Briscoe

  43. Henri Nouwen, In The Name of Jesus “We are not the healers, we are not the reconcilers, we are not the givers of life. We are sinful, broken, vulnerable people who need as much care as anyone we care for. The mystery of ministry is that we have been chosen to make our own limited and very conditional love the gateway for the unlimited and unconditional love of God. Therefore, true ministry must be mutual.”

  44. My Life Lesson #4 Ministry is not only a communal experience, but also a mutual experience.
