Lesson 1: Automated Systems By the end of this lesson you will be able to: • Describe an automated system • Give 3 examples of automated systems • List 3 reasons why automated systems are used. • List 2 good effects automated systems have had on work places. • List 3 good effect automated systems have had on businesses. • Explain why automated systems are extremely adaptable compare to humans.

  3. Lesson 1: Automated Systems Output Input Process What is an Automated Systems? Automated system remove the need for people involvement in every step of a machines operation, rather computer technology controls the process by continually sending instructions to the motors and switches in the equipment to operate it correctly. Examples At Home: Washing Machines Mobile Phones Kettle Central Heating At Work: Knitting Machines Car Manufacture Lathes Air Conditioning Humans are still required for inputs to the process and to use the output.

Automated systems are used because they: 1. are extremely accurate 2. don’t get bored of continually doing the same task 3. save humans from working in a hazardous environment 4. work faster than human 5. can be adapted by changing the program.

Investigate the planet Mars Put labels on tins of beans. Create a 0.05 mm thread onto nut. Spray paint cars. Change fuel rods in a nuclear power station.

  6. The Good Effects Automating Systems Automated systems used because they save humans: • doing boring repetitive tasks • doing tasks that are dangerous for humans. Automated systems used in business to because they: • work faster than humans • work more accurately than humans every time • produce higher quality work every time • are extremely adaptable, changing when needed. Automating systems means output per hour increases and guaranteed quality of output.
