  1. Calculation of the life expectancy by EUROSTAT: the basic method Giampaolo LANZIERI Unit F1 – Demographic and Migration Statistics Task Force on Health Expectancies, Luxembourg

  2. Life tables • The cohort life table shows information about the dying out of a birth cohort. • The period life table shows the same information of a cohort life table, under the assumption that this would happen to a hypothetical cohort if a certain set of mortality conditions pertained throughout its life. • The period life table is based on the conversion from the set of observed ASMRs Mx to the set of age-specific probabilities of dying qx. • Conversion from mx to qx based on: where ax is the mean number of person-years lived in the interval by those dying in the interval. Task Force on Health Expectancies, Luxembourg

  3. Calculation of period ex – basic method • Calculation of the ASMRs Mx by age-period • Assumption Mx = mx • Adoption of a set of ax values: ax = 0.5 • Calculation of the probabilities of dying: • Closing of the table at age 85: • Calculation of the probability of surviving from age x to age x+1: px = 1 – qx • Calculation of the number of left alive at age x: Task Force on Health Expectancies, Luxembourg

  4. Calculation of period ex – basic method • Calculation of the deaths: • Derivation of the person-years lived between age x and age x+1: • Calculation of the person-years lived above age x: • Calculation of the life expectancy at age x: Task Force on Health Expectancies, Luxembourg

  5. Sensitivity to the assumption on a0 • Selected values for life expectancy calculated according to different assumptions on mortality in the first year of age: Task Force on Health Expectancies, Luxembourg
