  2. Early Life • Dorie Miller was born on October 12, 1919 • He was born in the town of Waco, Texas • Attended Moore High School, and worked on his Father’s farm before enlisting

  3. First Service • Trained at Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Virginia • Assigned to USS Pyro, a ammunition ship • Served as Mess Attendant • Transferred to the USS West Virginia

  4. Pearl Harbor • Serving on the USS West Virginia • Collecting laundry at 6:00 a.m when alarm sounded • Went to his battle station (anti-aircraft battery magazine) to find it damaged by torpedoes • Went on deck and was ordered to help wounded sailors to places of greater safety • Manned a .50 caliber Browning anti-aircraft machine gun, until he ran out of ammunition

  5. The Naval Cross • On May 27, 1942 Miller was awarded the highest naval honor the Naval Cross • Awarded for extraordinary courage in battle

  6. Secondary Service • After Pearl Harbor Miller served aboard the USS Indianapolis, and the USS Liscome Bay • Aboard the USS Liscome Bay (cruising near Butaritari Island) a single torpedo struck the ship near the stern. • A few moments later the aircraft bomb magazine detonated, sinking the ship • Miller was listed as MIA • On November 25, 1944 Miller was officially presumed dead

  8. Honors • Commissioned on June 30, 1973 the USS Miller , a Knox-Class Frigate, was named in honor of Doris (Dorie) Miller
