  1. Nineveh is No More A Lesson to Build Faith in God and the Bible as His Word Isa 41:21-29

  2. Nineveh, an Ancient City • Built by Nimrod, the Great-Grandson of Noah Gen 10:6-11 • The date for the founding of the city is thought to be around 4500 B.C. (some say 5000 B.C.) • So Nineveh existed for around 4000 years before Nahum and Zephaniah predicted its destruction

  3. Nineveh, a Great City • Called so by God- a 3 days walk from one side to the other Jonah 1:2, 3:2-3 • Fortifications: Walls 100 ft. high and 50 ft thick; over 7 miles of walls; called “the wall which terrifies the enemy” by King Sennacharib; city was double walled; triple walled on east side. An 150 ft. moat around the outer wall; Tigris River was natural defense on the west.

  4. Nineveh, A Bloody CityNahum 3:1 • Pictured as a lion Nah 2:12 • Demonstrated in their destruction of No-amon (Thebes) 663 B.C. Nah 3:8-10 • F.W. Farrar’s description of Assyrian savagery • No one would be sad when they were gone Nah 3:7, 19

  5. Nineveh, a Guilty City which God Would Punish Nahum 1:1-8 • The Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished • Who can stand before His indignation?

  6. Nineveh, a Guilty City which God Would Punish • It doesn’t matter your strength and number Nah 1:12 • Man your fortress for the good it will do you! Nah 2:1 • Prepare for the siege; strengthen your walls! - inside your fortress fire and sword will destroy you Nah 3:14-15

  7. Nineveh, a Guilty City which God Would Punish Specific Predictions • Gates of the river opened; fortifications are “easy pickings”- like first-ripe figs Nah 2:6; 3:12-13 • Destruction will be complete Nah 1:8, 14, 15; 2:10-13; Zeph 2:13 • Flocks will lie down there Zeph 2:14-15

  8. Nineveh, a Guilty City which God Did Punish Fulfillment • The Khosr River (and perhaps the Tigris River) flooded, breaching the walls, and the city was easily and quickly taken. • Babylonian Chronicle says the victors “carried off much spoil from the city and temple area and turned the city into a ruin-mound and heap of debris.” The city was not rediscovered until 1840’s! Site lost for over 2000 years!

  9. Nineveh, a Guilty City which God Did Punish Fulfillment • Flocks lie down there- article by David Down, “Sheer Coincidence or Supernatural Foresight?” Babylon Nineveh

  10. Nineveh is No More God has given us evidence to believe in Him and His Word
