  3. 2-chunk term • An 8 sentence body paragraph that includes: • TS, CD, CM, CM, CD, CM, CM, CS note

  4. 1-chunk • A shorter body paragraph that includes: • TS, CD, CM, CM, CS

  5. Topic Sentence • AKA-TS • 1st sentence of the 2-chunk • Tells the reader what the paragraph is about • ALWAYS includes a topic/subject and an opinion (commentary) • does the same thing for a body paragraph that the thesis does for the whole essay Example: Mrs. Scharfis the best teacher. (subject) (opinion)

Concrete Detail • AKA- CD • Specific details that form the backbone or core of your body paragraphs • Evidence that supports the opinion in the TS • 2 basic types-paraphrases, quotations, • In other words: - stuff from the story -facts -examples -proof - support -on the surface info -the “what” Example: She asks students about their lives. (specific evidence provided to show that I am the best teacher )

  7. Commentary • AKA- CM • Your opinion or comment about something- not concrete detail. • Shows why or how your CD supports your TS • Your analysis, interpretation or evaluation about what happened • In other words: -stuff from your head -under the surface -the “why?” -the “so what?” -words with feelings -characters’ feelings Example: She cares not only about the academic success of her students, but also about their personal well being. (explains why asking about students’ lives shows that I am the best teacher!)

  8. Commentary cont. Commentary includes: • How does/did ____ feel on the inside? • Opinion • Inference • Insight • Significance • Reasons (Why did ___ do that?) • Color commentator (the sports commentator who provides insight, not the play-by-play guy)

  9. Concluding Sentence • AKA-CS • Last sentence in a body paragraph • As a result of the everything you have said, what can be said • All commentary • Does not repeat key word • Gives a finished feeling to the paragraph • In other words: -wraps up ideas - brings it all together -summarizes Example: As a result, Mrs. Scharf is able to support her students both in and out of the classroom. (shows the result of my actions)

  10. Model 1-chunk(You DO NOT have to copy this slide-yeah!!) Mrs. Scharf is the best teacher. She asks students about their lives. She cares not only about the academic success of her students, but also about their personal well being. As a result, Mrs. Scharf is able to support her students both in and out of the classroom.

  11. Summary In the “Summary” section of your Cornell Notes do the following: • Your friend was absent when we took our notes on the 2-chunk paragraph, in your own words explain to him or her the 4 parts of the 2-chunk and how they work together.
