ASEAN’s Regional Approach to Avian Influenza • The 27th Meeting of ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF), which was held on 29 September 2005 in the Philippines, endorsed the Regional Framework for Control and Eradication of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in ASEAN. • AMAF established the ASEAN HPAI Task Force to formulate the detailed implementation plans in collaboration with international organizations.

Strategic Areas to Address Avian Influenza • The Regional Framework for Control and Eradication of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in ASEAN covers 8 strategic areas, coordinated by the following lead countries: • Disease surveillance and alert system – Thailand • Containment measures – Malaysia • Stamping out and vaccination policy – Indonesia • Diagnostic capabilities – Thailand • Establishment of disease free zones/compartments for recovery export capacity – Malaysia • Information sharing – Singapore • Emergency preparedness plans – Malaysia • Public awareness and Communication – The Philippines

ASEAN Animal Health Trust Fund (AAHTF) • To signify ASEAN’s commitment and determination to support long-term sustainability of animal disease control in the region, the 27th AMAF agreed in principle to establish the ASEAN Animal Health Trust Fund (AHTF). • All ASEAN member Countries will contribute to a total of US$ 2.0 million. • ASEAN is currently working on the Agreement.
