  3. Mission The mission of the Army Environmental Policy Institute is to assist the Army Secretariat in the development of proactive policies and strategies to address environmental issues that may have significant future impacts on the Army

  4. Mission Concept: VAIA V VISUALIZE • Scanning the horizon for environmental issues and forecasting probable impact on the Army in the future • Gathering the best environmental intelligence from government, industry and academia or develop internally • Providing sound recommendations that Army leaders can incorporate into planning and policy making decisions • Building a bridge between policy and implementation through pilot programs A ANALYZE I INFORM A ACT CONNECTING TODAY’S ARMY TO TOMORROW’S WORLD

Who We Are • AEPI is a Staff Support Agency Reporting to the DASA(ESOH) • The AEPI Concept Evolved From: • Early realization that ESOH issues could have cost and/or mission repercussions • Early recognition of environment as a major force in Army decision-making • Desire to use the power of strategic thinking and foresight

AEPI History 1988 – 1989 Army Senior Environmental Leadership Conference (SELC I & II) Recommended Establishing an “Environmental Policy Institute” September 1990 Under Secretary of the Army Signed AEPI Charter 1994 – 2003 Located Georgia Tech, Atlanta, GA 2003 – Present Moved to Washington, DC

AEPI Operating Principles • A Small Core Staff (robust, high energy, strong diverse backgrounds, flexible, Army focused, independent) • Meet Army Priorities (strike a balance between present and future) • Cost Share (with other DoD offices, governmental agencies, and private industry) • Leverage University Expertise • Build Institutional Knowledge for the Army • Anticipate Future ESOH Issue and Impacts
