  1. English IV Unit 2 Day 24- Single Parents and Teen mom Discussion

  2. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  Do-Now: Have HW out (paragraph about teen mom shows). Put into your notes IN YOUR OWN WORDS: Use commas around “interrupters” or non-essential words/clauses/phrases. To determine if it is non-essential, ask: • If I delete this clause/phrase/word, does the sentence still make sense? • Does this clause/phrase/word interrupt the “flow” of the sentence? • E.g. Ms. Stitt, your English teacher, is excited to see her family over Thanksgiving. • E.g. She will miss her students, however, and will be excited to come back too.

  3. Just an extra note… • If a clause begins with the word “that,” it is ALWAYS an essential clause and doesn’t need commas. • The apples that fell out of the basket are bruised. • The turkey that she made was excellent. • Occasionally there are other clauses that are essential also. • The baby wearing a yellow jumpsuit is my niece. • You NEED the phrase to understand which one is your niece. • (This is opposed to a sentence like: My niece, wearing a yellow jumpsuit, is playing in the living room. The idea of this sentence is about how she’s playing a the living room– we don’t NEED to know what she’s wearing to understand).

  4. Try some! Do the sentences need commas? If so, where? • Ms. Stitt who loves green bean casserole feels that she can’t be satisfied without her favorite dish. • Ms. Stitt, who loves green bean casserole, feels that she can’t be satisfied without her favorite dish. • Her fiance on the other hand loves stuffing and pumpkin pie. • Her fiance, on the other hand, loves stuffing and pumpkin pie. • His brother Brendan is always the one who eats the most however. • His brother, Brendan, is always the one who eats the most, however. • I am someone who loves to go home simply for family time. • Correct • I believe that having people you love around you during the holidays is the best feeling in the world. • Correct

  6. Prayer (Saiku) Next Monday: Dennis

  7. SWBAT… • Discuss whether the media has helped or hurt the teen pregnancy issue • Explain the effects of single parenting on children.

  8. Is “Teen Mom” helping or hurting? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LblGAs2fFrA • What IS the original message of the “teen mom” shows? • Do you think the shows have lost their original message or not? • What do you think? Are these shows helping to combat teen pregnancy or not? Might they even be encouraging it?

  9. Brainstorm: • What are some of the effects of single parenting? How might it be different than a two-parent home? Take two minutes to discuss with a partner. • Chalk talk: • I will give markers to 4-5 people in different pairs. • One person from every pair will go up to the board and write one effect of single parenting. If you have no new ideas for this, put a checkmark next to one that you had written. • This is a SILENT activity. If you are not writing, pay attention to the responses from your classmates to see if you agree with what they have written.

  10. The effects of single parenting • Read article together • Take two minutes to… • Write a 3-4 sentence summary of what the effects of single parenting are. • Share with a partner.

  11. Questions: • Have teen birth rates increased or decreased over the years? • decreased • What are three negative consequences for teen parents? • More likely to drop out of high school; more likely to be unemployed and impoverished; more likely to divorce if they marry. Their children are more likely to be premature and underweight. • How much does teen childbearing cost taxpayers every year? • $11 billion • What are two main reasons for the high pregnancy and birth rates among teens in the US? • Girls are getting younger when they begin engaging in sexual activity. Children are more likely to engage in sexual activity when they have no father present in their lives.

  12. From 1996-2009, what kind of sex ed was being taught in schools? Why was this being taught? • Abstinence only. Taught for moral reasons and to prevent single parents (as teen parents often don’t end up married). • From 2009-present day, how has sex ed changed? Why has it changed? • “Evidence-based” because abstinence-only programs haven’t worked. Evidence based teaches what to do if you are in a situation. • What are three of the things that a teen pregnancy program must do to be effective? • 1) convince teens that not having sex or using contraception is the right thing to do. • 2) it must be a program over a longer period of time (more than a few weeks) • 3) it must be operated by leaders who are adequately trained.

  13. HW: • Read the “Shame is Not a Four-Letter Word” article and answer the questions. • HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING!

  14. Exit: • Write three effects of single parenting.
