  2. Bell Vocabulary 10.1 • prate v. To talk about vainly or foolishly • predicate v. To state as belonging to something • prehensible adj. Capable of being grasped

  3. Why define? • Extended definitions allow for personal interpretation. • BE WARY OF YOUR AUDIENCE! • Good choice topics- emotional, often misunderstood, multifaceted, abstracts.

  4. Choosing a topic • What do you already know? Expertise? • Concept? Object? Type of Person? Controversial issue? • Can your topic be organized and adequately defined within the parameters of the essay/speech (yes speech!)

  5. Purpose • Inform/Explain or persuade? • Personal interpretations? Challenge preexisting accepted meanings? Discuss changes in meaning? • How “PC” will you be? • Consider your audience- education, race, class, gender, age….

  6. Helpful hints • Use common metaphors to paint a picture. • Give specific examples • Be careful of bias and “all inclusive” terminology
