  1. 1 Secondary Maths Tutor: How to Boost Your Childs Maths Knowledge While a smaller minority of children revel in learning maths, the much larger majority tend to dislike it as a subject and only learn it grudgingly. Maths, as a subject is generally one of the most disliked in secondary education, mostly because it is pure logic, and is not something that it is easy to bluff your way through. Either you know the required answers or you don’t and if you don’t, you can just write something in the hope of picking up points in an exam or other formal assessment. In fact, maths is a subject that is considered so polarising, that there have even been dedicated investigations into why students – and even adults – dislike it so much. The top reasons for people not engaging with the subject are: It often leads to low motivation. From a very early age, children are taught that the new life that they have been included in is fun, laughing, and new experiences. Then, along comes maths and spoils the party. Even the best teacher struggles to make maths an interesting subject. Counting cows and sheep https://www.elitetuitiongroup.co.uk/

  2. 2 might start off fun, but it loses a lot of glitz when a child tries to equally divide twelve sheep between four farmers, even more so when there five farmers all wanting a share of sheep. Young children lose motivation when the work gets hard, and that is a lesson that stays with them. It requires a lot of memory. Maths Tutor, like any subject, is a cumulative subject and requires the learning of a series of rules that make it work; if you don’t have the foundational elements in place However, it has many more rules than most other subjects and remembering which rules should be used when becomes tedious to many. But it isn’t just remembering the rules; many of those rules require specific manipulation, and that requires even more memory. Learning other subjects usually requires learning fewer rules. Brain types vary. There has been plenty of research into why some people find learning a complex subject like maths very hard, while others find it easy and through this, logical, left-brain thinkers usually understand new concepts in sequential bits, while artistic, intuitive, right-brainers tend to see more of an overview. This means that students with a ‘left-brain’ may take new concepts on-board quickly and understand it, while right-brainers need to see the entire concept before they can start to appreciate it. Since we don’t subject our children to MRI scans or detailed psychological evaluations, teachers have to instruct to a certain level to cover the whole class. So, how do we make maths less difficult? What can we put in place to make it a subject that is a joy to learn?
