  2. Optical Art Op Art is comprised of illusion and often appears – to the human eye – to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematically-based composition. This art movement evolved around 1965.

  3. Victor Vasarely(1908-1997) • Hungarian born in 1908 • Moved to France in 1930 (considered a French Painter) • Worked as a Graphic Designer • Died in 1997 • Early work was in complex black & white patterns • Added intense color contrasts later in work. • Primary developer of OP ART

  6. Primary Colors • The basic colors from which all colors are mixed; red, yellow & blue. No other colors can be mixed to make primary colors.

  7. Secondary Colors A color created by mixing two primary colors together in equal parts: green, violet & orange.

  8. Intermediate (tertiary) Colors • A color mixed from a primary and secondary color.

  9. Vocabulary: • Composition: To create, form or design something by arranging parts to create a unified whole. • Geometric Shapes: • Any shapes and/or forms based on math principles, such as square/cube, circle/sphere, triangle/cone, pyramid etc… • Hue: Another name for color. • Value: The lightness or darkness of a color. • Intensity: The brightness or dullness of a color.

  10. Project: • Fold 9 x 9 paper in ½ and then in ½ again to form 16 squares. • Brainstorm a simple design unit can be made using circles, triangles, and squares. (refer to print) • Pick a pair of complementary colors: red/green, blue/orange or violet/yellow. • Design op art pattern using crayons and one or two design units. (vary placement & arrangement to draw the eye around the design)
