MY CULTURE: The Africa American culture Student name: watrs. Introduction . What is culture? Culture refers to refinement of the learned human patterns of behaviour. It is inclusive of various beliefs, morals, customs or any other behaviour acquired by an individual as a member of society .

Introduction What is culture? • Culture refers to refinement of the learned human patterns of behaviour. It is inclusive of various beliefs, morals, customs or any other behaviour acquired by an individual as a member of society. • Culture constantly changes over a period of time. • Culture is different from one group of people to another.
Description and components of African American culture • The African Americans are approximately 14% of the total population in the United States. • Our culture ( Africa America) is represented in many ways through music, dance, clothing, food, art and storytelling • The rich traditions of Africa combined with the colonial experiences introduced a new ethnicity in America, the African American
cont’ • Due to our African origin, we still carry out some of African traditions such as ‘Banjo’. This is especially seen through the food. • Songs and vigorous dance are some traditions inherited from the African customs and are still practiced to date • African American's culture is also symbolized by their way of living as a community.
Cont’ • We include immediate and extended relatives in our homes and have a strong sense of shared community unlike the white Americans. • We value a lifestyle of cooperation and sharing that involve tactile learning and cooperative grouping
Cont’ • Due to the fact that African Americans were initially slaves from Africa, our forefathers embraced and adopted Christianity. • The way African Americans practise Christianity is slightly different from how the whites do it. The Musical tradition is drawn from rhythmic African and melodic European models.
Cont’ • The diverse religious African beliefs are sometimes merged with Christianity to form ‘Voodoo’. • Our English language is also diverse. • The American blacks learned different dialects copied from their masters. This has carried on up to the current African Americans.
Comparison of my culture with other cultures • Cooperation-African American’s culture embrace sharing and living as one community • The traditional African dressing has been influenced by the western culture • Food-African American’s traditional food is still made but has been influenced by western culture.
The roles of race, class, age, and gender in my culture • Equality is encouraged across all ages genders and races. • My culture does not encourage discrimination or stereotyping. • This enables all citizens seek for opportunities in life without discrimination. • The role of women in my culture is to serve as caregivers especially in the family while men are perceived to be the bread winners in the family. • The elder people are respected in the community and are seen to have more wisdom.
Conclusion • The United States of America is home to different cultures and religions. • These cultures have harmoniously integrated and co-existed with each other over the past couple of years. • The African American culture still has some strong native African influence. • This influence is mostly manifest in the unity displayed among family members.
