  2. The Mouth Mouth equipped with a number of teeth – varying in structure & arrangement Upper surface of tongue covered with papillae Salivary amylase aids with digestion

  3. The Esophagus Esophagus is lined with circular and longitudinal muscles Push food along Regurgitation

  4. The Stomach Muscular, J-shaped, sac-like Lining filled with gastric glands secrete gastric juice Breaks food, mixes with gastric juices  chyme Pyloric sphincter: controls flow of food leaving the stomach

  5. The Small Intestine Subdivided into 3 regions: duodenum, jejenum and ileum Duodenum: u-shaped, shortest and widest. Pancreatic and bile ducts open into duodenum (chemical digestion)

  6. The Small Intestine Increase of surface area  aids in digestion Villi: projections -> covered with microvilli (intestinal glands in between villi)

  7. The Small Intestine Jejunum: more folds and glands than duodenum Break down remaining proteins and carbs Ileum: fewer and smaller villi. Absorbs nutrients

  8. The Large Intestine Consists of caecum, colon & rectum Shorter than small intestine Diameter is much greater than S.I!

  9. Large Intestine Caecum: sac-like, blind end of the large intestine. Appendix hangs from caecum Colon: water and minerals absorbed Feces passes into rectum  anal canal and out the anus

  10. The Movement of Food Peristalsis: movement accomplished by a series of wavelike muscular contractions and relaxations Involves longitudinal and circular muscles of digestive tract

  11. Peristalsis Circular muscles relax, while longitudinal muscles contract  circular muscles contract and longitudinal muscles relax  food pushed along
