March 24, 2011 EQ: Why did Jackson use force to remove Native Americans from the Southeast? Objectives: Describe the conflict over land occupied by Native Americans in the Southeast. Discuss the forced removal of Native Americans. Homework: Finish Graphic Organizer
The Man, the Myth, the Legend Andrew Jackson -Elected 7th President of the United States in March 1829 and remained President until 1837. -Belonged to the Democratic Party -Came from Tennessee -Famous for his victory over the British at the Battle of New Orleans (1814) -Also famous for his rude bluntness “Mr. Van Buren, your friends may be leaving you but my friends never leave me.”
Native Americans in the Southeast -Several Tribes still lived east of the Mississippi River. -Many of these tribes have begun to live as farmers and adopt the life of American culture. -The Cherokee tribe was the most sophisticated and most assimilated. What does assimilated mean? -The Cherokee developed businesses, written language and a written Constitution. -They claimed themselves as a separate nation from the United States.
United States vs. Native Americans -Many politicians viewed the Native Americans as a wall against their expansion towards the West. -Since the time of Thomas Jefferson it has always been government policy to push Native Americans out west to make room for an expanding nation. -Many hoped they would move on their own without force.
Unequal Treaties -Many Nations signed unfair treaties with the United States that tricked the Native Americans into signing over their land. -For example, most, if not all, treaties were written in English only. -By 1825, it was clear that the Native American Nations would not move and President Monroe increased government pressure on the Nations to move West of the Mississippi River. -Georgia passed legislation in 1825-1827 that force the Creeks to give up most of their land.
Native Americans Fight Back -Chief Justice John Marshall declared in Worcester v. Georgia (1831) that their removal law against the Cherokees was unconstitutional because…. -…they signed a treaty with the US making them a separate nation. Andrew Jackson responded by saying, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him try and enforce it.”
Indian Removal Act Andrew Jackson responded by saying, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him try and enforce it.” -Andrew Jackson and the Federal government passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830. -This forced, at gun point, the removal of thousands of Native Americans to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). -The first to be forced out was the Choctaw Indians in 1831. -The were forced to walk with no supplies and no winter clothing.
Trail of Tears -President Martin Van Buren forced removal of the Cherokee Nation to Indian Territory in 1838. -7,000 US soldiers removed the entire 15,000 Cherokee population on a forced march at gun point to Indian Territory. -They were given no winter clothing, food, water or long breaks. -4,000 men women and children died on the long walk.
