Create an Earthquake-Proof Building Project

In this hands-on project, your group will design and construct an earthquake-proof building model using limited materials: 20 notecards, 30 paperclips, and 1 foot of masking tape. The model must meet specific size requirements and withstand various seismic waves during a shake test. Each group member is expected to participate and adhere to lab rules throughout the construction process. Collaborate effectively to create a sturdy, innovative structure that demonstrates your understanding of earthquake engineering principles!

  1. Objective 11/1/12 Create an earthquake-proof building. Intro • Sit with your group. • Take out Earthquake-Proof Building Project Rubric worksheet. • Find materials and begin building.

  2. Instructions • The model must be: • At least as high as a piece of paper • No wider than half a piece of paper • Can only use these materials: • 20 note cards • 30 paperclips • 1 foot of masking tape • Able to withstand the three types of seismic waves

  3. Lab Rules • You are to remain on task! • All group members must participate • Follow the Lab Safety Rules!

  4. Project: Supplies: 20 notecards 30 paperclips 1 foot of tape Building must have a footprint the size of a half-sheet of paper. Must be as tall as a piece of paper (5 ½ footprint, 11 inches tall) Goal: not fall down or fall apart on shake table (3 shakes per wave type). Masking tape to show boundaries and amount of movement.

  5. Objective 11/1/12 Create an earthquake-proof building. DO NOW • One person from each group pick up your project • Hand-in Missing Assignments • Pick up Earthquakes worksheet from front lab table (tape into pg. 35) • Take out V-Map Outro None
