  2. Introduction You are going to be thinking like lepidopterists, a person who studies and investigates butterflies! Some butterfly experts have enlisted you for your fresh, young perspective, and because of your generations’ internet familiarity. This is going to take some flitting around on various websites for you to explore for your information. The big mystery involves learning what the life of a butterfly is like. You are going to be doing an exploration of the life cycle and anatomy of butterflies, and you will also get to pick a specific butterfly you would like to learn more about and report back to the lepidopterists.

  3. The Task You will become an expert on: • the life cycle of the butterfly • the anatomy of butterflies (during different life stages) • a specific butterfly of your choice You will share your expertise by: • creating an anatomy diagram • writing about the butterfly you chose

  5. Task #1 continued… • Once you have reminded yourself of all your life cycle knowledge, you can practice sequencing with the website below.   6. TASK #2 • It’s time to explore the anatomy of a butterfly. There are four websites (one for each major stage of the life cycle) for you to use in your exploration.   7. Task #2 cont… • Next, choose either the butterfly or the caterpillar and make your own diagram of its anatomy. 1. Use your markers to draw your caterpillar or butterfly. 2. Draw a blank (line) next to each part you want to label. 3. Put a number (starting with 1) next to each line. 4. Turn your diagram over, and on the back, copy the same numbers. 5. Next to each number, write the name of the body part that goes in that blank in your diagram. 6. Trade diagrams with the friend next to you, and fill them in. RUBRIC

  8. Task #3 • Once you are comfortable with the butterfly life cycle and anatomy, there is a little quiz you can find at the website listed below. As you answer each question, part of a picture will appear on the right. If you answer all of the questions correctly, the picture will line up. If you answer a question and the piece that appears does not fit with the others, that might be a hint that you should check your answer.   9. Task #4 1. Choose a few of the types of butterflies listed below to read about. 2. Select one type that you are especially interested in. 3. Use the website to color the butterfly in the way you think it might look. 4. When you are done, click on the “reference” site for your butterfly type to see a picture of what your butterfly actually looks like.

  10. Task #4 cont… 5. Use all your butterfly expertise to do a short write-up on your butterfly type. You have the option of doing your own investigating using different websites to learn more about your butterfly type, if you have time and get the teachers permission. You will use Microsoft word to do your response. It should include: • the name of your butterfly • a description of what some of the parts look like • at least 3-5 facts about your butterfly • any other information or visuals you find interesting and want to share RUBRIC
