How these relate to Tunisia issues and needs 1992 - Annual National Report on the State of the Environment -Plan of Action for the management of the coastal areas 1995 - Agency for the Protection and Management of Coasts – APAL - National Agenda 21 Sustainable Development Tunisia is party to the Barcelona Convention and is committed to develop a national strategy for ICZM according to the ICZM Protocol Need for: • technical expertise on ICZM planning and implementation • inclusion of sustainable development concepts into policies, plans of action and programs of sectoral development • legal framework, particularly for coastal and marine protected areas • participatory process and concerted decision making process

Previous experiences in the K&M pilot area: • SMAP I “Conservation and Management of Biodiversity Hotspots: Developing a Mediterranean Network, Tunisia” - El Feidja National Park (2000-2003) - WWF MedPO • “Out of the Blue” project (2000-2003) - WWF MedPO • “Tourism and Conservation in the Mediterranean” Project (2002-2004) - WWF MedPO • “Projet Contribution au développement durable à travers la promotion de produits non ligneux de la forêt en Kroumerie, Tunisie” (2004-2007) - WWF MedPO • “Projet d’appui au processus de création d'un parc national marin et terrestre dans la zone située entre Cap Serrat et Cap Negro,Tunisie” Project - UNDP, APAL and WWF MedPO

Main ICZM issues in K&M pilot area • Network of ecologically representative and effectively managed marine/coastal protected areas • legal framework for the creation of the network • management plan for the network of protected areas • Waste management • Sustainable recreation, tourism, fisheries and agro-forestry management • STRATEGY FOR THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY OF THE NETWORK OF PROTECTED AREAS

Main ICZM issues: GS Municipality • A new territorial planning of the southern coast of Grand Sfax: • Progressive de-contamination of the SIAPE industrial site (phosphate) and other industrial sites in Sidi Salem and along the road of Gabès • Rehabilitation of the salt mines and of the municipal landfill • Establishment of a natural park in Thyna wetlands • Promotion of the Local Agenda 21 in Kerkennah archipelago • Rehabilitation of the archaeological site of Thyna • Sustainable recreation, tourism and fisheries management • INTER-SECTORIAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION MECHANISM

Work program and milestones of the project • ICZM planning phases: • Preparatory phase – Jan-March 2006 • WORK PLAN, GOVERNANCE & PARTICIPATORY PROCESS • Assessment phase – March-Dec 2006 • COASTAL PROFILES • Analysis, forecasting and strategy formulation – Jan-Aug 2007 • ALTERNATIVE DEVELOPMENT SCENARIOS • Monitoring and evaluation – 2007-2008 • MONITORING AND EVALUATION PROTOCOL • ICZM Planning – Aug-Dec 2007 Comprehensive and participated ICZM PLANS OF ACTION, specifically tailored to the needs and potentials of the coastal area concerned

Work program and milestones of the project Participatory process and public awareness raising: • Stakeholders analysis • Sharing projects aims/results through meetings/workshops • Capacity building and training on ICAM and other issues • Visibility / public awareness activities Stakeholders preparedto the ground implementation of ICAM plans of action
