  5. 2 In the late 1500’s, the Spanish founded several of these along the coast of Georgia. One, in particular, was called “Guale” – it is now referred to St. Catherine’s Island. Their main purpose was to convert natives to the Catholic faith, but they also hoped to make the Indians adopt the Spanish language and culture, trade with them, and have men of a certain age serve as Spanish soldiers. They eventually disappear from the GA coast due to Indian-led revolts, Indians moving back into the interior of GA away from the Spanish, and pirate attacks (from other European countries) along the coast.
