  2. Introduction West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust • 3 Hospital Sites: Watford, Hemel Hempstead & St Albans • Achieving all key quality, emergency care and elective targets • Emergency bed capacity is a key issue, after 2 challenging winters

  3. The Bottomline . . Whatever the commissioners tinker with, providers will have to do more with less. Hence, they cannot do more of the same.   Change will be provider led.   They have to transform. Roy Lilley at nhsmanagers.net – 28th May 2012

  4. Predictive, Proactive Systems Whole-System Planning Questions: - Social & Primary Care Who is likely to need hospital care? What is our local profile? - Admission / Assessment How many? When? Do we have the right care available? - Diagnosis, Treatment & Care With what? For how long? - Discharge to Primary & Social Care Are services aligned to patient's needs?

  5. Predictive, Proactive Systems From 'Informed' Decision-Making: - Which solution do we 'think' will work? - Will the CEO / FD / other staff buy it?! To 'Evidence-Based' Decisions: - What is the real problem? - Which options have we tested properly? - Which do we 'know' will have most impact? Ps: Can I know about a problem before it happens?

  6. Health Care and a ‘Waiting’ Culture Waiting is the Bane of the Medical System: “By the time you see the doctor, you’re either dead or you’re better.” Blog by Lisa Gualtieri at http://lisaneal.wordpress.com/ Waiting is an integral part of the NHS . . . How much of it is necessary? How much does it all cost?

  7. Predictive, Proactive Systems We know that: Does: System Waits = Patient Experience System Waits = Overall Cost

  8. Conclusion Generating ideas and testing which resonate!
