    1. ALAN tests Year 10 July 2009

    2. What are they? ALAN stands for Adult Literacy and Numeracy Tests. You have been entered for either Level 1 or Level 2 tests you must take the same level test in literacy and numeracy We have entered you for the test appropriate to what we know of your ability. If you pass both tests at Level 1 you will have achieved a GCSE which is equal to grade D. Passing both Level 2 tests will give you a GCSE grade B. If you comfortably pass both Level 1 tests we will give you an opportunity to take the Level 2 tests next year. If you narrowly fail one or both of the tests today, we will give you another chance to pass them at another time.

    3. What are they like? Each test is made up of 40 questions All the questions are multiple choice, each giving you four possible answers The literacy test questions usually start with a short piece of writing with the lines numbered and then a number of questions about that writing. The numeracy tests usually involve a real type of problem which requires some basic maths to solve it. The pass mark for each test is about 25 marks, but it can vary between 20 and 30 marks.

    4. How do I complete the tests? You will have been given a slip of paper with your name, the level test that you are doing and some password information on it. You will be told how to use this to complete the first test (Literacy, 1 hour) starting at about 10.00 and the second (Numeracy, 1 hour 15 minutes) at about 12.20.

    5. What should I do before the test? Just to get you warmed up, try the word games on the following sites if you cant access the first, try the next one on. You can try searching for word games in Google if you have any difficulties. http://www.eastoftheweb.com/games/ http://www.wordplays.com/p/index http://agameaday.com/ http://www.shockwave.com/online/word-games.jsp YOU WILL HAVE ABOUT 15 MINUTES

    6. How can I practice for the tests? Search for alan tests in google Choose the second result down it says something like ALAN engine Follow the instructions and try the LITERACY practice tests there are two for each level MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT LEVEL ITS ON YOUR SLIP At 10.00 you will start the real test

    7. What is the best way to tackle the test? Take your time. You have almost two minutes for each question. Use the piece of paper and pencil provided if you need to. If you cant answer a question, you can leave it and return to it later. Make sure that youve answered every question before you close the test you may guess correctly and get a mark, but if you dont answer it you definitely havent! If you finish early, go back to some of the word games you tried earlier. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE UNTIL THE BELL GOES AND YOU MUST NOT DISTURB OTHERS WHO WILL BE CONCENTRATING ON THEIR WORK. Good luck!!!!

    8. For the afternoon. To start your brain up again, try some of the games at either:- www.mymaths.co.uk Or http://www.coolmath4kids.com/ YOU WILL HAVE 15 MINUTES Then try the practice tests for numeracy as you did for literacy earlier in the day The Numeracy test will start at 12.20 follow the advice on the previous slide for completing the test YOU WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY NEED TO USE THE PENCIL AND PAPER TO DO SOME WORKING OUT. If you finish early, log back on to one of the games sites but DO NOT DISTURB THE OTHERS! Good Luck!!! Results will be available next week come and see me if you want them (Mr Haywood)
