  4. Computer gives : - explanations - descriptions - illustrations to enhance language learning - illustrate operations - stimulate conversations.

  5. CAL and CALL: What are they? CAL refers to learning involving utilization of computer in which students are given a freedom to choose any topic of information and even to become a trouble-shooter of their own problem. CALL means CAL which is implemented to language; utilization of computer is directed to make provisions to language learning tutorial program.

  6. CALL: Underlying consideration Ruhlmann (1995): “With computer-assisted learning programs, students learn actively, respond to question, complete interactive tasks, and enter a personal dialogue with their electronic tutor. ….”

  7. Advantages of CALL Making own decision to develop reading habit which enables them to scan information of their interest. Freedom to choose any topic of information available. Be able to collaborate in problem solving in wide range of different contexts. Flexible time for student to determine topic and how long he wants to learn.

  8. Disadvantages of CALL • Insufficient to be carried around, studied wherever and whenever students wish. • Opening hours to use computer is restricted. • Costly enough to purchase equipment, design programs, and for the maintenance.

A typology of CALL Programs and Application Grammar CALL Programs designed for teaching grammar include drill and practice on a single topic (Irregular Verbs, Definite and Indefinite Articles), drills on a variety of topics (Advanced Grammar Series, English Grammar Computerized I and II), games (Code Breaker, Jr. High Grade Builder), and programs for test preparation (50 TOEFL SWE Grammar Tests) Grammar units are also included in a number of comprehensive multimedia packages (Dynamic English, Learn to Speak English Series). Listening This category includes programs which are specifically designed to promote second-language listening (Listen!), multi-skill drill and practice programs (TOEFL Mastery), multimedia programs for second language learners (Accelerated English, Rosetta Stone), and multimedia programs for children or the general public (Aesop's Fables, The Animals). Pronunciation Pronunciation programs (Sounds American, Conversations) generally allow students to record and playback their own voice and compare it to a model. Several comprehensive multimedia programs (Firsthand Access, The Lost Secret) include similar features.

ReadingThis category includes reading programs designed for ESL learners (Reading Adventure 1 - ESL) and tutorials designed for children or the general public (MacReader, Reading Critically, Steps to Comprehension). and games (HangWord). Also included are more general educational programs which can assist reading (Navajo Vacation, The Night Before Christmas) and text reconstruction programs (see below).Text ReconstructionText reconstruction programs allow students to manipulate letters, words, sentences, or paragraphs in order to put texts together. They are usually inexpensive and can be used to support reading, writing, or discussion activities. Popular examples include Eclipse, Gapmaster, Super Cloze, Text Tanglers, and Double Up.VocabularyThis category includes drill and practice programs (Synonyms), multimedia tutorials (English Vocabulary), and games (Hangman, Scrabble). Also useful are several reference and searching tools (such as concordancers) which will be described in the Computer as Tool section below.

  11. Web Based Learning • Web-Based Learning is associated with learning materials delivered in a Web browser, including when the material are packaged on CD-ROM or other media.

  13. CALL in resume • CALL means CAL which is implemented to language; utilization of computer is directed to make provisions to language learning tutorial program. • A computer as a medium is used for the sake of facilitating people in learning, such as learning a language.

CALL in resume • CALL is one of the best means of providing a better method in language teaching; computer-based language is assumed to be better than any other non-computer-mediated language instruction methods. • Computer gives explanations, descriptions, and illustrations to enhance language learning, illustrate operations, and to stimulate conversations.
