  2. Challenge question and vocabulary • Copy the challenge question (leave space for your answer). PAGE C-8 • Copy the following vocabulary words (leave space): • contour interval: The elevation difference represented by two lines next to each other on a topographical map. • contour line: A line on a topographical map indicating places of equal elevation. • key: Portion of a map showing the meaning of the map’s symbols. • scale: Portion of a map comparing the distance on the map to the actual distance. • topography: The shape of the land, or collection of landforms, in an area. • topographical map: A map that uses contour lines to represent the elevation of land surfaces.

To do… • Examine the “Street Map of Boomtown Today” map. • Describe the features visible on the map. • Examine the “Topographical Map of Boomtown Today” map. • Lines are drawn to connect areas that are the same height above sea level. • These lines are called contour lines. • The height difference between contour lines is called the contour interval. • What is the contour interval for the map of Boomtown? • Examine both map’s keys and scales.

To do… • Read C-8 • Complete steps 1-8 • USE 10 DROPS WITH STEP 1 / Leave drops at the sink • Answer: • Analysis 1, 3, 4 • Complete vocabulary • Challenge question (you do need to explain why) • Clean-up when finished with lab • Send one person with containers to back of room. • Set containers with water on back shelf. • Clean (with paper towel) and return all materials (and desk) to location they were found. ***Move safely when cleaning. Sit in seat if not cleaning/returning materials***
