Managed Wetlands Treatment System

The Managed Wetlands Treatment System effectively reduces phosphorus concentrations in water through a combination of chemical treatment and natural bio-filtration processes. Phosphorus-rich inflow is treated with chemicals that bind to the phosphorus for effective settling. Post-chemical treatment, the water flows into constructed wetlands for additional purification before being discharged into the Everglades. Lab-scale tests optimize chemical use to ensure efficiency. This initiative is a collaboration among the South Florida Water Management District, Florida DEP, U.S. EPA, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

  1. Managed Wetlands Treatment System Schematic Water with phosphorus is mixed with chemicals. These chemicals bind with the phosphorus and settle out of the water. Inflow with Moderate to Low Phosphorus Concentration Settling Chemical Addition and Mixing Outflow with Lower Phosphorus Concentration Solids Disposal After chemical treatment, water is directed into a constructed wetland for additional phosphorus removal and conditioning. It is then discharged to the Everglades. Lab scale tests are used to determine the amount of chemicals needed to remove phosphorus.
