The United Nations The United Nations aims to unite the global community with a focus on the well being of all people The UN is NOT a world government The UN addresses issues such as: poverty, starvation, disease, oppression, and environmental threats More international law has been developed through the UN in the past 5 decades than in the entire previous history of mankind

  3. The UN Charter • Ratified on October 24, 1945 • Establishes the conditions for membership • Sets fundamental rights and principles for all member states • Lays out purpose and structure of the UN • The Charter does not give authority to defy member state sovereignty • In fact… Sovereignty is perhaps the most respected and protected right of the United Nations

Structure and Function • Security Council (SC) • Charged with maintenance of international peace and security • Made up of 5 permanent members (China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, and United States) and ten rotating members • Permanent members have veto ability for any action of the SC • The Security Council is the only UN organ that can demand actions from the member states • Trusteeship Council • Oversees the administration of the Trusteeship system • Now somewhat obsolete because all Trust Territories have gained independence or self-governance

  6. Structure and Function • International Court of Justice (ICJ) • Principal international judicial body • Rulings based on international conventions and treaties, international custom, general principles of law, and judicial decisions and teachings • 15 judges; 9 year terms; elected by the general assembly • Secretariat • International staff which conducts administration of the Organization • Secretary-General (SG) acts as the main spokesperson, diplomat, and activist of the UN
