  3. Launching telnet • Click the start icon on the lower left corner of your page • Click on Run • Type irix.gl.umbc.edu

Logging in to Account • When prompt for login name, Type in user login name (i.e. jsmith1) • IRIX (irix2.gl.umbc.edu) • ******************************************************************************* • WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS to this computer is in violation of Article 27, • Sections 45A and 146 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. • NOTICE: This system is for the use of authorized users only. • Individuals using this computer system without authority, or in • excess of their authority, are subject to having all of their • activities on this system monitored and recorded by system • personnel. • In the course of monitoring individuals improperly using this • system, or in the course of system maintenance, the activities • of authorized users may also be monitored. • Anyone using this system expressly consents to such monitoring • and is advised that if such monitoring reveals possible • evidence of criminal activity, system personnel may provide the • evidence of such monitoring to campus officials or law enforcement • agencies. • ******************************************************************************* • login:

Accessing email • Type in mail or pine • IRIX (irix2.gl.umbc.edu) • ** Attention CS Students: Those working on projects which "experiment" with • fork(), please DO NOT run these on the central Linux servers. Instead, • use a workstation! All OIT open lab machines can also boot to Linux, or • experiment on your home/dorm system! Failed execution of these programs • is causing service outages for hundreds of other users!!! • You have no new mail. • export: Command not found. • TERM=ansi: Command not found. • irix2[1]% mail

  7. Commands • Use the Initials listed to the left of the desired page, to access the page • Press I – mail box folder • Press c – to compose a message • Press l – view all of your folders • Press A – Setup an address book • Press s – set up preferred settings • Press q – to quit

  8. Menu Page • ? HELP - Get help using Pine • C COMPOSE MESSAGE - Compose and send/post a message • I MESSAGE INDEX - View messages in current folder • L FOLDER LIST - Select a folder OR news group to view • A ADDRESS BOOK - Update address book • S SETUP - Configure Pine Options • Q QUIT - Leave the Pine program

  9. Compose Message • Complete the message desired • Press ctrl x to send message • When prompt to say yes or no, press y – to send message and n- to cancel message • To exit from the compose message browser, press ctrl c to cancel message

  10. Navigating through emails • In order to navigate through emails, use your arrow keys to move up and down • Press enter to view the message desired • Press I to return back to your folder • Press R to reply

  11. Summary of Instructions • Basically follow the easy to follow directions displayed at the bottom of the page • In order to exit from telnet, press q- to quit and exit out appropriately • Hope you have fun accessing email through the telnet system at UMBC.
