  2. Title IX: Anti-Discrimination • From the Education Amendments of 1972 • Applies to all colleges and universities that receive federal aid • Must not discriminate on basis of sex in athletic programs • Proves compliance by meeting one of three standards

  3. Three-Prong Test of Compliance • Provide athletic opportunities proportionate to student enrollment • Expansion of athletic opportunities for underrepresented sex • Full accommodation to interest and ability of underrepresented sex

  4. Equal Treatment • Travel allowance • Per diem allowance • Assignment of coaches • Provision of facilities • Provision of equipment

  5. Final Notes on Title IX • Applicability Covers all educational activities, including non-sports activities, traditional academic aspects and student life (dormitories). • Administration Handled through Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Education
