Advances • Payments made to artist before any income received due to artist’s abilities • Normally nonrefundable • Publisher or producer may keep royalties that would have been paid to author • Publisher or producer able to recoup up to the amount of advance to cover costs • Most contracts dealing with writing involve advance clause
