  1. Changing perceptions:earth, self, god Jesus seminar on the Road Fond du Lac, Wisconsin October 6-7, 2017

  2. Changing Perceptions of Earth Clayton Crockett University of Central Arkansas

  3. Mechanical Science and Philosophy The origins of Early Modern science in Europe: Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton Geocentrism (Ptolemy, Aristotle) vs. heliocentrism What is a scientific law? The same laws apply on earth and in the celestial realms God’s role is transformed in natural religion and natural theology--deism

  4. Politics and economics The “discovery” of the new world shifts global power from east to west due to genocide of natives, abundant natural resources, and development of plantation slavery in Americas Modern capitalism begins in Holland in 1600s with first joint stock market First religion, and then race, is used to justify European colonization, subjugation, destruction and enslavement of native peoples, in America, Africa and Asia

  5. Natural resources as reserves to be exploited Native human populations, animals, trees, minerals and later fossil fuels are seen as resources to be exploited by “clever” white Europeans There is a fundamental break between the social world of ethics and politics, and the natural world of things Rights and Social contracts only exist among modern humans; others, including humans and nonhuman animals and plants, are objects or tools to be used for profit

  6. Energy exploitation drives industrialization

  7. Industrialization and Fossil Fuels ANCIENT FORMS OF LIFE COMPRESSED INTO SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS FUEL INDUSTRIALIZATION AND MODERNIZATION THE STEAM ENGINE WAS DEVELOPED TO PUMP WATER OUT OF COAL MINES IN BRITAIN, AND THIS INVENTION PROPELS GREAT BRITAIN TO WORLD POWER IN 19TH CENTURY WITH DRILLING OF OIL FIELDS IN MID-19TH CENTURY, AND THEN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE, GROWTH AND TECHNOLOGY ACCELERATE EVEN MORE IN 1900’S, USA TAKES OVER AS WORLD POWER BASED ON OIL RESERVES AND FINANICALIZATION OF WORLD WAR I

  8. THE GREAT ACCELERATION1945-1970 UNPRECEDENTED GLOBAL GROWTH AFTER WW2 DRIVES INDUSTRIALIZATION OF MOST COUNTRIES, DECOLONIZATION OF MANY ASIAN AND AFRICAN NATIONS GIANT OIL FIELDS IN MIDDLE EAST REPLACE AMERICAN OIL FIELDS AS PRIMARY SOURCE OF OIL FOOD SUPPLYAND GLOBAL POPULATION SOAR, “GREEN REVOLUTION” IN AGRICULTURE USES MACHINERY THAT RUNS ON OIL AS WELL AS SYNTHETIC FERTILIZERS

  9. NOTHING LASTS FOREVER! INFLECTION POINT IN GLOBAL GROWTH AROUND 1970 WE START TO RUN UP AGAINST REAL PHYSICAL LIMITS TO GROWTH AS OVERALL GROWTH SLOWS, THE ONLY WAY TO GROW IS RELATIVELY CONCENTRATION OF WEALTH AMONG AND WITHIN NATIONS AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENT IN 1970S, BUT NO POLITICAL WILL TO CHANGE SYSTEM OUTSOURCING PRODUCTION AND POLLUTION TO POOER COUNTRIES

  10. Capitalism vs. the planet global economy based on indefinite growth, but earth’s resources are finite

  11. Global warming Scientists virtually all agree that planet is warming due to human activities The last three years were hottest in recorded history, year after year Feedback loops and tipping points accelerate climate change IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) 5th assessment report 2014 estimates 1.4-3.1 degree celcius temperature increase as well as sea level rise between .3 and .7 meters by 2100—these are fairly conservative estimates but will have tremendous effects

  12. Living in the Anthropocene – new geological era Are we experiencing the sixth mass extinction in earth’s history? Planet is getting hotter, sea levels are rising, but also ocean acidification, more extreme weather events, scarcity of fresh water, overpopulation, food security, rare earth minerals, arable land, conflict over remaining hydrocarbon reserves, danger of nuclear radiation. The poor and underdeveloped are most vulnerable to effects of climate change WWJD? Christianity as triumphant nativist nationalism vs ministering to most vulnerable. Proponents of biblical literalism encourage ignorance that accords with ignorance of our ecological situation and promotes acceptance of authority at enormous costs
